still searching for a practicalwayof playing .wav files through my hifi. i have tons of stuff digitized on hard drives etc....but hooking a laptop up, then resorting to its DAC chip through the headhone jack to me doesn't cut it.any stand alone players out there yet? christ it is 2014, you'd think so. not interested in MP3

...what i had in mind was a "stand alone" unit with RCA outputs, that i could load with uncompressed files via a PC or USB drive, then plug in to any amp or preamp and deliver CD quality sound, witout having to use CDs. just another traditional "stereo component", but not a CD player...and not an iPod

Not sure why you would need RCA outputs as opposed to a stereo mini. You can buy a cable the converts from stereo mini jack to RCA.

You can record as well as playback wave and mp3 files. It uses SD card. Just fill you SD card with music and you can playback using this. This connects directly to amps using cable.

You can also get lossless files from CDBaby or from your own collection... you don't HAVE to buy from the Pono site, it isn't iTunes, they don't lock you in

I use the Scott Nixon USB ufo DAC for my digital playback. It sounds great! Just plug usb into your computer and use RCA outputs from the DAC to your preamp or amp.

There are kits that turns a CDROM into a CD-player (Like this one). How coold hadn't been to find a similar controller for a HDD?!

Recently I got this Teac CD / USB player to replace my almost dead Carver SDA-490t. This thing sounds really good as far as CD's go and the USB digital stuff ain't half bad either.

I've become a huge fan of using a Raspberry Pi running Raspian OS and Squeezelite as a Squeezebox client. I keep all my high-bitrate audio files on a WHS2011 server running Logitech Media Server and feed the Pi via a USB DAC (may switch to a HiFiBerry I2S DAC) into my stereo and control it via wireless (tablet or phone).
