My first two HiFi amps (SET 6B4G and 6V6)

Postby Rand Reich » Fri Feb 01, 2013 12:30 am

Finally posting some pics of my first two single ended amps which I designed and built last year.

Here's my build blog with more details and pictures:

"The Marv" uses 6B4G triodes, fixed bias, with a 6SL7 driver with no cathode bypass cap.

"The Marv II" uses 6V6 pentodes, auto bias, with a 6SN7 driver.

Both employ an R-Core power transformer, hexfred HT rectification, Cap-Choke-Cap filtered with low ESR Mallory's. I rigged a 3-position power switch with a thick film resistor to drop the mains for the middle "standby" setting.

Sound wise I'm quite happy. I held a listening party with 3 buds, 4 pair of Klipsch (KG3.2, KG4, Cornwall II, La Scala) and one pair of Linn, and 4 other amps (Linn, Carver, Scott Stereomaster Tube and Cary Audio SE-1 with 300B's). The Cary Audio was the only amp that could hold a candle to either of mine. It certainly had more power. Most of us agreed mine had better imaging and dynamics. The Marv II (6V6) has a nicer tonal balance. The Marv (6B4G) has a bit less bottom but cleaner/sweeter overall and the spectrum analysis proves it.

Thanks nyazzip! Yeah, after all the amp porn I've viewed (plenty on this forum and others), I decided a nice layout and clean wiring was something to aspire to. I still get a small amount of 60hz hum from the 6B4G amp (especially with high sensitivity speakers). Next time, I'll design for DC heaters.

Sweet very sweet...! (wine)

Try either a choke or one more pi filter to reduce the hum. In my SE amps I always go CLCRC. Recently I was breadboarding an EL84 PP and got some very weak hum out of the regulated PS, so I added a 1700uF motor run cap and poof NO hum - more uF helps too.

If there's no sound in a vacuum, where'd the music come from?

Dovetails make SETs even sound sweeter. Nice work. (y)
