OT: Obsolete Transistors

Postby Shannon Parks » Sun Jan 13, 2013 1:21 pm

I'm making a Mouser order today and I'm stocking up on transistors. In particular, I'm keeping an eye out for ones that could be considered obsolete and might disappear. Here's a relic from the CRT era:
http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datashe ... E13001.pdf
I no longer see it on the Fairchild website or Mouser or Digikey, but Chinese sellers on eBay still have them for pennies:

I admit that I don't have a purpose for these (probably a cathode CCS), but any high voltage TO-92 transistor seems like a possible useful tool in the tube realm. I grabbed a hundred for the toolbox.

What I've been looking for is some TO-3 germanium power transistors, to complete a 12VDC to 300VDC DC-DC inverter (using one of the Triad toroidal TY-XX series trannies) . IIRC the part numbers are 2N1554, but it's been a LONG time since I worked with any of these. 2N307s aren't quite gutsy enough, and the "doorknob" power transistors like 2N278 are a PIA to work with, the mica insulator washers / mounting kits and properly drilled out heatsinks are tuff to find these days.

Hrm... I pulled apart some CFL's that had MJE13001's in them.

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Ah ha! Watch out for that mercury, btw. (lol)

Ed, I'll start gathering old germanium transistors at the hamfests from now on. I need to go to a spring fest this year. Dayton maybe?

I love sushi.... I eat more mercury in the fish than breathe from the CFL bulbs (sick) (lol)

A mate has quite a plastic drawer full of mercury, saving it up from bulbs and relays over the years (666)

I have fond college memories of duels with the T8 long bulbs ala Star Wars light saber battles. A defunct storage building was beside our dorm and it was FULL of them. Good times!

Hehehehe! We did that on a construction site in my younger and more physically fit days (lol)

there have been warnings that the Chinese MJE13XXX are lower rated than they should be. I dunno if that's true, just rumours.

Btw. I have a bunch of those or to be more specific, all teh silicon stuff for the Leach (original) amp:
12 2N5210
10 2N5087
5 2N3439
4 2N5415
2 MJE15030
2 MJE15031
4 MJ15003
4 MJ15004
If someone wants to buy the bunch, you know who has them ... ;)
