Sprague Atoms

Postby coop402 » Wed Nov 21, 2012 3:01 pm

I needed 2 100v 100uf, and 2 25v 100uf,

I couldn't find the 25v ones.
So I ordered 4 100v for a good price.

What is the downside of using them in the 25v bypass cap position
on a 6sl7?

Why did I pay for Sprague Atoms? I dunno. Probably because of the
magic electron fairy pixey dust that comes in them for the extra money.
hahhahahah

whatever... Will this be a problem?

Running caps that much below their voltage tends to make them drifty and a little leakier over time... no biggie for bypass work.

Cheers!

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

I have a strong dislike for Sprague Atoms , we used to use them in a product me made at work , they had a high failure rate . I just fixed a ST70 that had one under the chassis for the first cap , it had a 2008 date code , that shorted and took out the power transformer .

The products were leased out and the about 1/3 the Spragues would fail in 2 years use , the mallory's at that time would go 6 years and the panasonics went 10 years before starting to fail .

Typically I go to the electronics surplus store and pick the 105c Nichonins, or Panasonics for pennies on the dollar. Just building from that Angela SE EL34 schematic. It calls out Atoms. Honestly, I have never known much of a difference....

Hmmm. Silly business this whole idea of boutique parts. I may not have a perfectly trained ear, but I have a hard time hearing much of a difference between say paper in oil over an orange drop cap.

Live and learn...

The only clients that insist on them are guitarists, because of the tone.

I've never encountered a HiFi amp with them.

Cheers!
