Each are different with their own charms.

Though for my own use, I use this one as well as a MooseFET.

Hi Geek. your MooseFet also looks very interesting. Would a centertapped transformer work with your board? Radio shack has a 25.5v 450ma one for 8bucks. How does the circuit do driving vintage tube amps? Finally any comments on how it sounds compared to the Single tube stage? Thanks again.

Yes, that transformer will be fine. Even not using the CT and derating the transformer by 0.45, it will supply the current.

Sound.... different. MooseFET sounds very triode-like.... maybe even more tubey than the single tube PAS line stage.

In public, people totally loved it or totally hated it - there was no in-between ;)

The single tube PAS, all responses have been like yours. No one sent one back so far.

MooseFET can drive anything so far... SS amps, tube amps, new and vintage. Even the horrible <2K input-Z of those Parts-Express monoblocks that used to be available for $150.

Cheers!

Geek, thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll just stick to the Single Tube stage sense I know already how it sounds. Are there any cheap options on a power transformer for it that come to mind?

I used back-to-back transformers. The type with the dual 115V primary windings.

115V --> 6.3V --> 6.3V --> 230V

Rectify and use a simple C-R-C with an "R" to give you the B+

Use the 6.3V for your heaters.

Cheers!

Geek, what a great trick. I had no idea that I could do that with two transformers. Are there any phono circuits that would work okay with the outputted voltage range? Thanks.

Pretty much any tube ones made for the PAS... they draw at most 5mA/board.

Hi Gregg,

With regard to your single tube PAS linestage, does using a 12SL7 retain a lush quality and what has been called "big tone" from such octal preamp tubes, or is it less so due to the hybrid design, which seems to make it lively, etc..?

Thanks.
Peter

According to my clients, it retains it.
