5998A SET

the thermionic watercooler

Postby soundbrigade » Tue Feb 23, 2010 4:33 pm

Well I have installed everything (I hope) in the 6L6 OddWatt but I am into something different.

From a piece of exotic wood I have carved a suitable chassi for my next project - a 5998A SET, but using one tube/channel = 7-8W.

Some shots of today.

Yeah, I hope so. I wanted to get out of the (Hammond) box and go for something that looked lower and also had another look tahnenamelled steel or aluminum.

Interesting, umm, router you must have there?

Sorry I didn't bring the camera, but YES I won the dust and chip competition.

I also carved out the holes for the BR ports in the MDF:

Holy crap, man! Get yourself a router! It's impressive you carved all that out with a drill bit. In my mind I was picturing a highly trained squirrel doing all that woodwork work for you.

Hang on ....!!!! I have a router, but in this case it was very hard.

The holes in the backside of the speaker are made by a special drill and then rounded with MY router.
The hole in the wood is made by my router, but the wood was very hard so I had to use a chisel and a drill. Some fixing up was made by a router (mine).

Very nice, that is an impressive biit of woodworking! I like the solid block of wood for the chassis, much nicer than simply making a "box" from plywood or hardwood.

Is the 5998 SET going to have parallel output tubes? And atwhat B+ voltage and current are you operating them?

I've been pretty much "off-line" the past few weeks, but will get back to "business" soon.

Well, I made a nasty cut with my router yesterday and have to redo the backpanel ...
Vanode = 307V. I cannot tell you right now what B+ will be. I intend to run the two triodes in each tube in parallell and propably end up with some 7-8W/channel.

This project is postponed till next week however ...

Pretty nice design for a chassis. I was once prejudiced against wood as the material for a tube chassis, but I am mending my ways...
